Our researches and discoveries

The country

“What is the meaning of the flag? How are built their houses? What looks like the country?” The curiosity of the children has no limits, these questions are a part of many more one that we settle by crossing a new country.

Ecuador has a fauna and a flora very diverse, the whole concentrated on a quite small country and this through 4 types of different ecosystems. We spent a bit more than a month on the territory and stayed in the central part, called the Sierra.

The Ecuadorian flag is constituted by three horizontal strips topped with a blazon. Based on the flag of Big Colombia (today : Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Ecuador) of which it was a member before taking its independence, we find a double yellow strip at the top then a blue strip and finally one red. The coat of arms in its center is the one of the country since 1900.
However colors don’t same meaning for Ecuador and Colombia. In that case, the yellow represents the sun, the seeds and the mineral wealth, the blue refers to the sky, to the ocean and to the rivers and the red is held for the blood of the patriots poured into the fight for the freedom and the justice.

The equator is the smallest country of the Andes. The country is home to 4 different ecosystem: the Galápagos, the Coast, the Sierra and the Amazonia. This peculiarity offers it the possibility of a very big wildlife and floral diversity. For example, we find 4000 species of orchids among the 25000 existing in the World there!

What brings us to the agriculture and the breeding within the country. We met farmers awakened in the problem of the OGMs and the pesticides and creating a biological national network. People react in the face of health problems or simply by choice but, regrettably, the clientele is not ready to invest in healthy products in the face of low-cost products.
So the country produces according to these 4 zones: bananas, coffee, cocoa, corn, barley, wheat, potatoes, maracujas, tomatoes of tree, pineapple, guavas, pitayas, papayas, …
Furthermore, the floriculture knows a strong expansion in particular in the export.
Thus these agricultural and floral exports benefit the economy of the country.

At the head of the exports, the banana, followed by some cocoa, the Inca gold, which is very present on the coast of the country. It is moreover possible to find some strong aroma cocoa which is the ancestral fruit here in Ecuador. Tours are possible to learn more about the long process of the harvest and the transformation of this product.
Also for the coffee, because even if he is native of Ethiopia, he is very cultivated, essentially for the export where 80 % of the flow comes from this small country (figure 2012).

The constructions are similar in the other crossed countries: adobe, sand, brick and concrete.
However we find many more roofs made of tiles!

The inhabitants

“Their favourite sport? The international celebrities? Their pets? The resemblances and the differences with France?” Here is partially what wanted to know the children of Quinson.

South America is the continent of the football. The equator does not break the rule, however the volleyball also is very present with city parks equipped with grounds. We had the pleasure to learn that trumpitos is also very famous at the older generations. The trumpito, that is the spinning-top, creates a real craze. José, Ecuadorian in about fifty, told us the time when he created themselves spinning-tops before being in confrontation on various types of tests. Today, it is simpler to buy them!

You understood it, Ecuadorians like speaking about sport and it’s the same for politic, thus we decided to find a celebrity for each of the categories.
So, the former president, Rafael Correa possessed a big popularity in Ecuador. We speak even about 75 % of favorable opinions. It is necessary to say that the relations tightened with the United States please Ecuadorians. That is why the eviction of the territory of the American ambassadress, helped his coast of popularity beat all the records.
Concerning sport, three times world champion, doubles Olympic medal-holder among whom golden time, Jefferson Pérez, the child of Cuenca, is an idol in the whole country. This athlete specialist of 20 km walking possesses the most beautiful sports price list of Ecuador.

Since Peru, pets are the same: cats, dogs and pigs of India. Horses, mules, hinnies and donkeys are very present but especially as means of transportation.

By speaking about animals, we are obliged to quote islands Galápagos where are unique species. Islands are famous in particular because they were on the base of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Why had not similar species sudden the same evolution of one island in the other one? Would the evolution have chosen the sorts(species) best to adapt for every island?

And finally, a last one, about the inhabitants, it is necessary to know that the Incas had spread their empire to Quito, so a big part of the country shares the same cultures as Peru or Bolivia. Moreover it is the only country which integrated the natives into its constitution, so protecting their cultures and their lands. So the country counts 13 native nationalities and each has its legends and its faiths.

Art and legends

So the Incas strongly influenced the legends and the Ecuadorian musics. You can judge by yourself with theses musical extracts in the Andean tones. Or just bellow with legends of the loving Condor.

  • first extract :
  • second extract :

The Ecuadorian legend is a Kichwa legend, one of the numerous native communities. These is bound to the Quechuas and has even 14 under nationalities recognised by the state as only one. It is to say the importance within the country.

The spirit Pachakama created the universe. Then he realized that he needed a flying messenger to send messages on Earth. By means of the strengths of the universe, he created an egg which became a condor.
The condor performs its messenger’s mission from its birth, through the dreams.
After several years, the condor felt alone. ” Everybody has a partner even rabbits. And I am alone “. Then he began to look for love.

Roaming in the Andes, he sees a girl bringing sheeps out. It was immediately love at first sight! He went to meet her having stolen a poncho and clothes to seem more beautiful for her.
She took him for a man with his poncho which he had stolen and immediately fell in love with him. Shortly after, she realized that it was a condor and they flew away together. At the beginning she was afraid, then the flight captivated her. They flew over places such as: the lake Quilotoa, the summits of Illizinas, the mountain of Chimborazo and the sacred volcanoes of Cotopaxi and Tungurahua.

Finally, they arrived on Kunturmatzi, one of the quarries of the high Andes, where lived the condor. He drop her off girl and for every kiss he gave her, feathers grew on the girl.
When the villagers found her, she was completely transformed into a female condor, and her parents had to accept her transformation.
The spirit Pachakama was happy because the connection with the people of the Earth was strengthened.
Today, when a girl brings out ewes, her parents warn her: ” beware on the Condor! “

At recipes level we also find Andean flavors: the cuy, the humitas, many cooking based on rice and potatoes…

We chose humitas as the recipe of this article. We eat it since Bolivia, it was necessary to honor to them!

The equator is known so all over the world for its sombreroes in straw of Toquillo, so called Panama. These hats require between 2 days and 1 year of weaving according to the wideness of the straw, which could reach the price of several thousand US dollars!

But why Ecuadorian hats are called “Panama”? During the construction of the Panama Canal between 1882 and 1914, the engineers bought hats for the whole staff of the site, creating a symbol within the work. During the inauguration, one of these hats was offered to George Washington, American president in function at that time, as symbol of the work. As for his return in Washington people asked him what was the name of this hat, he answered: ” Panama “.

It is with all these informations that Quinson’s pupils started to work on their vision of the country.
